Mert Heusinkveld describes his experiences serving on board two carriers, the USS Hornet (CVA-12) and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42)from 1954-1957. During the 1950s these carriers had anti-aircraft guns for part of their protection system. Mert's assignment was as a gunnery officer.
