BRIEF ITINERARY (View photo credits here.)
• Left Pier 12, Norfolk, VA in June 1967 to join fleet on ''Yankee Station'' in Tonkin Gulf. (WESTPAC CRUISE)
• In route crossed equator (more about Shellback initiations to follow) stopping at Rio de Janeiro. The purpose: Show of force.
• July 18, 1967 arrived at Subic Bay Naval Station.
• Joined Yankee Station fleet and began air-strikes over Vietnam about a week later.
• July 29, 1967 fire on board Forrestal. More to follow later.
• Returned to Subic Bay Naval Station.
• About a month later arrived back in Norfolk, VA but went immediately into dry dock in Portsmouth, VA for 7 months of repairs.
• Training Cruises at Gitmo (Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) and Montego Bay, Jamaica.
• In mid-August we went on a Med. Cruise, joining the USS Independence.
• First port was Marseilles, France.
• 2nd port, my favorite, was Athens, Greece.
• 3rd port was Malta.
• 4th port was Taranto, Italy.
• 5th port was Thessaloniki, Greece.
• 6th port was Palma, Spain.
• 7th port was Genoa, Italy. My time was nearly up and I had leave time coming. I took 3 days of it and went on a $45.00 tour of Rome. More to follow later.
• 8th port was Cannes and Golfe Juan, France.
• I left Forrestal at Cannes, was flown to Spain, then to Philadelphia, PA arriving early on New Years Day, 1969. I was discharged on January 16, 1969. Married Wilda Alford January 19, 1969.
