FOCUS - Including Samuel

Several years ago, Dan and Betsy Habib's son Samuel was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Along with their older son Isaiah, the Habib's worked thoughtfully to include Samuel in their family's activities. Soon after, their commitment to Samuel's inclusion had turned to advocacy. Dan Habib, being a photojournalist, decided to document his family's progress so that he could effictively demonstrate how people with disabilities could be more involved in group activities.

Shot and produced over four years, Habib's award-winning documentary film Including Samuel honestly chronicles the Habib family's efforts to include Samuel in every facet of their lives. The film also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with dozens of teachers, young people, parents and disability rights experts.

On this episode of Focus, Kathy Lehr talks with Dan Habib about his experiences making the documentary. Also, Dr. Peg Gutsell and Dr. Joe Petner will discuss how families, schools, community members and event organizers can include people with disabilities into their social activities.
