On January 28th Cincinnati lost one of its most generous arts patrons. Arts & culture and education institutions across the city are mourning the loss of Patricia A. Corbett. With her husband J. Ralph Corbett, they contributed millions of dollars in gifts and thousands of volunteer hours to support numerous institutions in our region. Over the past few decades their contributions have improved arts & culture facilities, provided arts & culture programming on television and established education programs.
To site a few examples of their generosity their gifts have provided:
- Renovations to Music Hall, including the Corbett Opera Center and Corbett Tower
- Built two auditoriums at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music
- Established the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Corbett Education Endowment
- Built Riverbend Pavilion
- Provided numerous challenge grants during CET’s fundraising campaigns
- Established a String Quartet In Residence and build a theatre at Northern Kentucky University
- Provided funding for several arts & culture television shows co-produced by CET for PBS, including the first Cincinnati Pops specials, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra: Jesús López-Cobos Conducts Ravel & Dvořák and the Cincinnati May Festival's debut PBS performance in 2001.
The list is truly endless. Beyond all of the programs, venues and endowments what made Patricia Corbett so special was her genuine enthusiasm in those who were creating the art she was supporting. Whether she was in her first row seat at CCM, in her box at Music Hall, or in CET’s studio she would take the time to talk with musicians or actors following a performance. She would share a compliment or listen to a story with as many people as possible. Her presence and spirit will certainly be missed. |
