Public Media Connect Helps to STEMulate Young Minds

Our first president, George Washington, was once quoted as saying, “To encourage literature and the arts is a duty which every good citizen owes to his country.” Although PBS is most widely known for its broadcast programming, local stations offer much more to the community, sharing of literature, the arts, and science. Through a variety of programs and local events, PBS has an impact on the children and young adults in our community, as well as their parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers.

Public Media Connect, ThinkTV and CET, recently participated in the annual two-day TechFest, held at Sinclair Community College. Our booth was set up with a variety of hands-on science and math activities so both students and parents could discover the workings of circuits, a plasma ball, and a bionic eye. During the event several parents shared testimonials of their experiences watching ThinkTV, CET and PBS, and the impact the station has had on them and their children.

“Our family lives out in the country, so we don’t have cable,” one father said. “So everything that my children and I watch is on PBS. Part of me thinks that if it weren’t for PBS, my kids wouldn’t be interested in [STEM].”

Another parent gave some insight into how she and her daughter utilize PBS in their home. “My daughter has a learning disability, but every day I’ll sit with her and watch Sesame Street and Super Why and go through the lessons with her.” She continued, “I remember growing up watching Sesame Street and Mister Rogers Neighborhood, and I’m really glad that she can grow up watching shows like I used to at her age.”

At Public Media Connect, we appreciate hearing how we impact our viewers. It’s our mission to provide our viewers with high quality educational and entertaining programming and content that everyone, young and old, can enjoy. We thank our members for their generous support that allows us to reach more than 1.3 viewers of all ages each month.
