Sleeper Pick – Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson

Last Updated by Kellie May on

Each month Program Director Jim Wiener picks a program that may fly under the radar of national publicity, but ends up a surprise hit with viewers. He calls it the Sleeper Pick. This month’s Sleeper Pick is Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson. Here are the details from Jim:

To create a song is one thing.  To take an existing song – one very recognizable – and essentially transform it into something else is… something else again.

“All Along the Watchtower” was written by Bob Dylan. But Jimi Hendrix made it a classic. Take Del Shannon’s top 40 hit “Runaway.” Bonnie Raitt did, slowed it down with a wicked blues beat, and made it a whole new song. Eric Clapton even made “Layla” a hit twice over, one a rock anthem, the other an acoustic gem.

Tony Succar applied this formula to the music of Michael Jackson.

The Peruvian-American music arranger was a Jackson fan all his life when he challenged himself to take so many iconic songs like “Billy Jean,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Smooth Criminal”… and give them salsa-infused arrangements.  Not only that, Succar had to sell the idea to Latin artists, including big stars like Jon Secada, Tito Nieves and Jean Rodriguez.

As if Michael Jackson wasn’t the King of Pop, his music had great crossover appeal with Latinos.  Tony Succar has now given us a tribute album in return. Unity was released last spring, and you can now see over a hundred artists perform Jackson’s songs in a whole new way.
