WCET Education & Technology is very proud to present Girl's Health, a project funded by the sponsors of Speaking of Women's Health, 1997. the Girl's Health project was designed and developed by a regional team of educators. It has been created in effort to meet the instructional and curricular needs of teachers, parents and young girls dealing with growth and development issues.
The project is comprised of several elements including videotapes, print materials, information for parents and project Webpages. Each one of the five video tapes and accompanying print material will focus on one of the following five topics. They are Puberty, Menstruation, Visiting the Gynecologist, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Birth Control (including abstinence) and Pregnancy. The project has been designed in segments to meet the varying needs of teachers and students within their respective school districts. It is our hope that teachers use the flexible nature of the project design and structure to pick and choose what is most appropriate for their classroom needs.
As mentioned above, each video tape will be accompanied by print material. The material will serve as a teacher's guide to each segment and will describe the following elements for each video: Main Ideas, Teacher Background, Suggested Activities, Tips for Success and Resources. The Main Idea section can be used for an "at a glance" review of the segment's key points. The Teacher Background area will give a more detailed overview of the content for teachers. In the suggested activities section, teachers will will find a wide range of ideas for use with the video tapes. There will be ideas for independent work, as well as small group and whole class instruction. Tips for Success will be provided to share with teachers the common pitfalls faced when dealing with the given subject matter. Also in this section, strategies will be shared that may be particularly useful. The last section, Resources, will supply a list of diverse resources to assist in planning of instruction. The resources may include print materials, such as books, brochures or other publications, Website addresses, local health agencies, video resources and more.
We realize that all of the information the video and
print segments address many not be covered in each classroom. For this reason, we would
like to encourage schools to make a second video tape series set available to parents and
students for home loan. This will provide parents will the tools to review or discuss
these issues with their children at home. A letter explaining this opportunity is
available for parents and should have been received with your project kit.
