eTech Ohio Student Video Contest 2008
Student Video Contest (SVC) 2008 recognizes outstanding student achievement in the use of video production technologies while meeting Ohio state academic content standards and other instructional objectives. If your school is interested in participating, please review the information below.
Submissions will be accepted from any current public or private school student or group of students in grades 6-12. SVC 2007 categories include:

eTech Ohio and the Ohio Public Television Stations present the Fifth annual Student Video Contest (SVC) 2008. The purpose of SVC 2008 is to recognize outstanding Ohio student achievement in the use of video production technologies while meeting Ohio academic content standards and other instructional objectives. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit their video productions in the categories of Tell a Story or Demonstrate a Concept. Videos are submitted to a student’s or student group’s local public television station by Wednesday, November 14, 2007, where they compete against other submissions from their area. Regional winners advance to compete in a statewide competition in December 2007. State finalists and the sponsoring teacher will be invited to participate in the 2008 eTech Ohio Educational Technology Conference. State finalists and the Videos of the Year will be honored during an awards ceremony on Wednesday, February 6, 2008.
Who May Apply? The contest is open to ALL current Ohio 6-12 grade public or private school students or groups of students. Students of all subject areas are encouraged to submit their video productions.
How Does the Contest Work? SVC 2008 consists of both a regional and state level competition. Applicants submit their entries to their local public television station by Wednesday, November 14, 2007. Regional winners go on to compete at the state level in December 2007. State finalist teams will be honored at the 2008 eTech Ohio Educational Technology Conference on Wednesday, February 6, 2008.

How Do I Apply?
CONTEST RULES
- Participation is limited to students in grades 6-8 or 9-12
- Submissions must be from current (as of Friday, August 31, 2007) public or private school individual students or student teams
- Videos will be accepted in one of two categories – Tell a Story or Demonstrate a Concept
- Submissions are limited to up to 4:00 minutes, with a student introduction of :30 seconds or less. Total video project length should not exceed 4:30.
- The video must address one or more Ohio academic content standards. Information about Ohio academic content standards can be found at http://www.ode.state.oh.us
- Applicants must include two (2) copies of the video on Mini DV, DVD-R or VHS format
- A signed release form must be included for each person appearing (including image, voice or any other likeness or description) in video and a signed release form granting publishing clearance from each creator of the submission
- Video must be viewable by all audiences
- Citations must be provided for all copyrighted materials used
- Submit your video entry by Wednesday, November 14, 2007, to your local PBS television station.

TELL A STORY CATEGORY
Submissions in the Tell a Story category can present fictional or non-fictional narratives using classic storytelling conventions (setup, plot and/or character development, dialogue, denouement, resolution, etc.) or following the six (6) standard journalism questions--who? what? when? where? why? how? Videos in this category might dramatize an original story or classic work of literature, address a local issue or event or present a biographical account of a historical or present day individual.
DEMONSTRATE A CONCEPT CATEGORY
Submissions in the Demonstrate a Concept category can show or illustrate a student’s or student team’s competency or understanding of how to do something. Videos in this category might illustrate a theory or hypothesis, provide steps or directions for completing a task, explain a model or belief system or present a solution to a problem.
Note: Videos in either category can take the form of drama, comedy, documentary, interview(s), PSA (Public Service Announcement), music video or any combination of these formats. |
APPLICANT RESOURCES
Regional winners will be sent on to compete in the state contest in December 2006. Eight state finalists will be contacted in January 2007 and invited to attend the 2007 eTech Ohio Educational Technology Conference at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, February 12-14, 2007.
WHAT DO THE STATE CONTEST WINNERS RECEIVE?
State finalists receive complimentary registration and lunch for up to seven (7) team members (e.g. five (5) students, one (1) teacher, one (1) adult chaperone) for the eTech Ohio 2008 Educational Technology Conference, mileage and parking reimbursement (at the current state reimbursement rate) for up to two vehicles, substitute teacher reimbursement for up to two days (up to $75/teacher), award plaque and student t-shirts. Of the state finalists, one video in each category will be honored with the distinction of SVC 2008 Video of the Year.
HOW DO WE LIST THE ACADEMIC CONTENT STANDARDS?
List the Ohio Academic Content Standard(s) that this video meets for the appropriate grade level -- including standard, benchmark, and grade level band. Information about Ohio Academic Content Standards can be found at http://www.ode.state.oh.us/
Samples:
Grades 9-12 > Technology Standard > Design > Identify and produce a product or system using a design process, evaluate the final solution and communicate the findings.
Grade 5-7 > English Language Arts > Communication: Oral and Visual > Speaking Applications > Present ideas in a logical sequence and use effective introductions and conclusions that guide and inform a listener's understanding of key ideas.
Grade 6-8 > Social Studies > Economics > Identify connections between government policies and the economy.
