Now in its seventh year, On The Same Page is an annual community reading event hosted by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and supported by community partners including CET. The mission of this annual event is to enhance our sense of community through a shared reading event which encompasses all of Hamilton County. Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes was selected as the youth title for 2008. Named a Coretta Scott King Award Winner in 2003, Ms. Grimes' novel portrays a high school English class as they discover ways to express themselves to each other through poetry. Jennifer Weikert, a teen librarian at the Westwood Branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, is joined by local teens to share their insights about this novel. Runtime: 16 minutes Growing Green & Healthy Schools Cincinnati Public Schools leads the nation in developing high performance school standards within a large, urban district. In September 2007, Cincinnati Public Schools made a public commitment and adopted guidelines to complete the third and fourth segments of the largest school construction program in their history as 'green' schools. It began with a vision that includes connections to the community, changes in the curriculum and the design and construction of greener and healthier schools. Growing Green & Healthy Schools is a five-part video series that will explore how it all began with a vision to improve the quality of local education, grew into a school board policy and is moving from theory to implementation with an emphasis on the academic, economic and health benefits for the thousands of students and teachers in CPS buildings. St. Bernard High School No Smoking Campaign Students at St. Bernard High School have been busy this fall on a school-wide No Smoking campaign. Junior Class President, Ashley Jarvis and Vice President, Sarah Callinan, share all that the student body has been doing to create more awareness about the affects of smoking. They have joined "stand" a program of the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation that encourages students to be activists about tobacco. The high school students have been working with The American Cancer Association and the Hamilton Tobacco Coalition to train fellow students who will teach children in the local elementary schools about the hazards of smoking. First Book - Putting Books in the Hands of Kids Who Can't Afford Them Donna Burns and Jessica Smith talk about the Cincinnati First Book Local Advisory Board and the U.C. Med Mentors Program -- a program that puts books in the hands of children from low-income homes.. First Book is a Washington D.C. based non-profit organization with a Cincinnati chapter. While there is no substitute for the conversations a child has with an adult such as a parent or teacher, television does afford opportunities to enhance overall language and specific vocabulary skills beyond what can be attained through personal interactions. Through conscious and creative programming, the time children spend watching television, rather than detracting from their language and literacy growth can alternatively be a medium for advancing these capabilities. What television offers is the possibility of carefully controlling the input to the child in a medium that children have access to and interest in. Here are some useful tips for making the most of the time spent watching WordGirl on TV. WATCH TOGETHER As you watch WordGirl with your child, talk about what you see on the screen. Ask: what do you think will happen next? What word do you think could help save the day? MAKE CONNECTIONS Ask your kids to talk about their own adventures.
