BRIDGES for a Just Community honors four individuals for distinquished service at the 58th Annual Awards Dinner on June 5, 2008, at the Duke Energy Center for making significant contributions to the improvement of human relations in the Greater Cincinnati Community. This year's honorees were Lee A. Carter; Inayat K. Malik, M.D;Harry H. Santen, Esq. and Phyllis S. Sewell. |

Lee A. Carter a Cincinnati native with a long history of founding and leading many philanthropic organizations in our community. Mr. Carter's marketing career spanned many decades, as the president and founder of Local Marketing Company. He is currently chairman of Mind Peace and is immediate past president of the board of Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He is also president of the Thomas J. Emery Memorial, a baord member for the Ronald McDonald House and CET. Mr. Carter previously served on the board of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and as president of the Cincinnati Parks Foundation. He is a resident of Hyde Park. |

Inayat (Ike) K. Malik, M.D. is a local physician specializing in urology. After more that 10 years of involvement with BRIDGES for a Just Community, Dr. Malik served as the organizations president from 2003 to 2005. Dr. Malik helped lead BRIDGES through its recent separation from the National Conference for Cmmunity and Justice(NCCJ)and was recently named the first chairman of the newly-formed National Federation for Just Communities. He is president of the board of the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati and a founding member of the Islamic Education Council, currently serving as its president. He is a resident of Indian Hill. |

Harry S. Santen graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law and founded Santen & Hughes LLP, where he was a partner until he retired in 2003. Mr. Santen previously served as president of the Cincinnati Bar Association, president and chairman of the Legal Aid Society, founding board member of the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation, and founding member and initial chairman of both The Center for Mediation and Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor Foundation. Mr. Santen lives in Mariemont. |

Phyllis Shapiro Sewell started her career at Federated Department Stores in 1952 and retired as senior vice president of research and planning in 1988. She has been a member of the board of directors for five New York Stock Exchange companies including SYSCO Corporation and U.S. Shoe Corporation. Ms. Sewell's community service includes more than 25 years with the United Way and service on the board of trustees for the Jewish Federation, Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati and Jewish Hospital.
Ms. Sewell is a resident of Hyde Park. |
