Mercantile Library
The Mercantile Library is a subscription library and non-profit institution. The name Mercantile Library refers not to the collection but to the Library's founders, who were young merchants and clerks. Organized in 1835, it is the city's senior library and one of the oldest cultural institutions in the midwest.

Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Cynthia Tucker spoke at the Mercantile Library's sixth annual Harriet Beecher Stowe Lecture on June 10, 2008. Tucker is editorial page editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a syndicated columnist whose commentary appears in more than 70 newspapers around the country.

Playwright Steven Dietz at the Mercantile Library
Playwright Steven Dietz will talk about his career writing and directing plays. Locally his works were recently performed at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park (Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure) and Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati (More Fun Than Bowling). Steven Dietz is one of America's most widely-produced and published contemporary playwrights. Since 1983, his twenty-plus plays have been seen at over one hundred regional theatres in the United States. His talk is part of the Mercantile Library's 2008 Winter Author Series.
The Settling and Unsettling of the Ohio Valley
Authors Robert Morgan (Boone, Gap Creek), Dark Rain Thom (Warrior Woman), and James Alexander Thom (Follow the River, Panther in the Sky) discuss how the coming of white people to the Ohio Valley was an integral turning point in the history of the whites and the Native Americans. This panel discussion was part of 2007 Books By the Banks.
