FOCUS: Cincinnati Police / Youth Live-In
Since 1969, the Cincinnati Police Department has partnered with Bridges for a Just Community to offer a traditional camping experience for at-risk inner city youth at Camp Joy in Clarksville, Ohio (about fifty miles north of downtown Cincinnati). So far, the Police Youth Live-In has brought 4,220 young people and 430 police officers together.
For five days and four nights, one hundred and twenty middle-school students and twenty Cincinnati police officers live, work and play together while fostering trust, understanding, friendship, and respect. This experience gives inner city youths the opportunity to interact with police officers and to learn about safety, police procedures, conflict resolution, drug prevention, setting goals for personal development and learning how to create a just and equitable community. They also enjoy usual camp activities such as swimming, archery, games and crafts.
