Across the U.S., wealthier neighborhoods have more trees. In fact, American Forest’s tree equity score finds areas with extreme poverty have 41 percent fewer trees than upscale neighborhoods. There are also racial disparities. Neighborhoods of color have 33 percent less tree canopy than white ones.
By the mid-2030s more people will be 65 and older than under 18. That is putting additional pressure on the housing and rental markets because there aren’t enough affordable homes and apartments to let older adults age in place. Beltways, a Northern Kentucky start-up, will announce a pilot this fall with a major airport for its accelerating walkway technology. The accelerator is twice as fast (2.5 mph) as the one passengers are used to. It has been rated for a top speed of 5 mph. Sometime in the future the founders envision this walkway outside, connecting neighborhoods.
